What is a tar.zst file?
A TAR.ZST file combines the TAR archiving format with Zstandard compression. Files are first collected and organized using TAR, maintaining their directory structure and metadata, then compressed with Zstandard, Facebooks efficient compression algorithm. This combination provides both reliable archiving and fast, effective compression.
This format is particularly valuable when both archiving and high-performance compression are needed. Zstandard typically offers better compression ratios than GZIP with significantly faster compression and decompression speeds, making TAR.ZST ideal for backing up large datasets, software distribution, or any situation requiring efficient storage of multiple files. When creating TAR.ZST archives with ezyZip, date information is not included and empty directories are not added to the resulting archive file.
